How To Do Shadow Work Prompts, Get Started Right Now

We often hide everything that is considered ugly, bad, shameful, weird, taboo or socially unacceptable.

This in turn becomes a shadow, the part of us that contains the parts of us that have been shunned, denied, rejected or otherwise negatively condemned by our parents, family members, and different pockets of society growing up.

I realised as a neurodivergent, black woman from a British African background that I was masking as a form of protecting myself from the shame and pain of being me

Do you ever feel like you’re not quite sure who you are or what you want in life? If so, shadow work might be for you! Shadow work for beginners is a process of exploring the parts of yourself that you’ve hidden away or denied. It can be challenging but also incredibly rewarding. In this blog post, we will provide 50 shadow work prompts to help get you started. If you’re ready to find more clarity and self-awareness, then give these prompts a try!

As a trauma-informed coach, I often encourage my clients to do shadow work for healing.

Why? Because it is a powerful way to become more self-aware and to heal old wounds. If you’re not familiar with the term “shadow work,” it simply refers to the process of exploring the parts of yourself that you’ve hidden away or denied. This can be anything from your fears and doubts to your dark thoughts and secret desires.

In order to bring your whole self to work, you need to accept your whole self. This includes the light and the dark. The parts of you that you’re proud of and the parts of you that you’re not so proud of. We all have things about ourselves that we’d like to keep hidden away, but those are often the very things that need to be addressed in order for us to heal and move forward.

Whenever you are triggered by someone or something this is indicative of a shadow part of self that needs healing. It’s an opportunity to explore the wound that is being activated and to do the necessary work to heal it.

It’s important to remember that shadow work is not about getting rid of the parts of yourself that you don’t like. It’s about accepting all of who you are – the good, the bad, and the ugly. We all have aspects of ourselves that we’re not proud of, but that doesn’t mean we need to get rid of them. Shadow work is about learning to accept all parts of yourself so that you can move forward in life with more self-awareness and clarity.

If you’re interested in doing shadow work, then I encourage you to give these prompts a try. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to do shadow work. Just go with whatever feels right for you. And don’t forget to be gentle with yourself. This is a process of self-discovery and healing, so go easy on yourself if you stumble along the way.

towards living a more harmonious, joyful, whole, and meaningful life.

The downside to repressing parts of ourselves is that this part of ourself begins to fester and amplify, sabotaging our lives.

How do you practice shadow work?

The following shadow work prompts will help you to do the wholeness work, which is imperative if you want to finally stop self-sabotaging, if you haven’t seen my previous post on how to do shadow work then go check it out because it helps you create the container for real transformation.

What are some good shadow work prompts?

The prompts that are good ones are ones that make you really uncomfortable

The ones you actually explore

The ones you learn to create new stories from

The ones that you give yourself permission to feel

Think about it like this

If you can ask questions that you already “know” the answer to

But you are still living in a misaligned way that goes back into survival mode

Spend some time reflecting on these questions and see what comes up for you. Then, choose one or two of the shadow work prompts below to start with.

Shadow work can be challenging but also incredibly rewarding. It’s an opportunity to get to know yourself on a deeper level and to heal old wounds. If you’re ready to find more clarity and self-awareness, then give shadow work a try! Here are 50 shadow work prompts to get you started:

50 Shadow Work Questions To Help Integrate Your Wholeness

The following shadow work prompts will help you to regulate your emotions so that once you explore these they will no longer be the albatross around your neck, sabotaging you unconsciously

1. What things have triggered you this week? Consider where those irrational feelings stem from.

2. What don’t you want anyone to know about you? Think about where you may be masking in your life and how much energy you will claim back when you stop

3. How judged do you tend to feel ona daily basis? And if you were to explore these judgements how many of these would be self imposed?

4. Pinpoint something that’s really frustrating/upsetting you at the moment. Now think of your fav comedy and write from that perspective

5. How can you begin to give other people more space and acceptance to be themselves around you?

6. When you think of the people that have hurt you in your life, how has that changed how you show up? Write a letter to yourself claiming back your spotlight

7. Where in your life are you playing small? And what does like look, sound, feel or smell like when you are playing small (what are the indicators, so you can spot it in the future). Answering this question to help with expansion

8. What positive traits do people always say about you? And what do you have trouble accepting about these traits?

9. What causes you to get angry or defensive? And what is the earliest memory that this pattern derives from?

10. Where in your life do you tend to expect other people to agree with your beliefs? (And what is the energy you give off when others don’t agree with you?)

11. What’s the one thing you know you need to do but keep avoiding? Write it down. Then write a step-by-step description of actually doing it. Include every action which would need to be involved in order to get it done. At the end of the exercise, explore how you feel.

12. I feel like I’m not good enough.

13. I’m afraid of being rejected.

14. I’m afraid of being alone.

15. I’m afraid of not being good enough.

16. I feel like I’m not worthy of love or attention.

17. I feel like I have to be perfect.

18. I feel like I’m not doing enough.

23. I feel like I need to be more _.

24. I feel like I should be further along in life by now.

25. I’m ashamed of _.

Take some time to reflect on these shadow work prompts. What resonates with you? Choose one or two to focus on and start exploring your shadows. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to do this. Just go with whatever feels right for you. Be gentle with yourself and trust that you will find your way.

Start by simply becoming aware of the shadows in your life. What are you avoiding or denying? What do you judge about yourself? What do you feel ashamed of? Spend some time journaling about these things. Write down whatever comes to mind, no matter how dark or difficult it may be.

The goal is not to get rid of your shadows but to understand and accept them.

How To Stop Being a People-Pleaser When You Have ADHD

When you people please it’s another ADHD mask of protection to help you fit in, so how do you stop being please when you have ADHD?

Let’s dive more into why it happens

Individuals with ADHD may be particularly susceptible to people-pleasing behaviour due to certain underlying factors. ADHD is characterized by difficulties with executive functioning, such as impulsivity, inattention, and poor self-regulation. These challenges can contribute to a heightened need for external validation and a fear of rejection or disapproval.

Moreover, living with ADHD often brings a sense of feeling different or inadequate. People-pleasing can be an attempt to compensate for perceived shortcomings and gain a sense of belonging or acceptance in social settings. The desire to fit in and avoid criticism or judgment can lead individuals with ADHD to prioritize the needs and expectations of others over their own.

How Executive Function Response Inhibition Plays a Part

Executive function response inhibition, a cognitive process that involves inhibiting impulsive responses, plays a significant role in people-pleasing behavior. Individuals with ADHD may struggle with response inhibition, making it challenging to think before acting or saying yes to every request.

The difficulty in regulating impulsive reactions can lead to a pattern of automatically saying yes without considering the impact on one’s own priorities, time, and well-being. This lack of response inhibition can make it challenging for individuals with ADHD to set boundaries, assert themselves, and prioritize their own needs.

In conclusion, people-pleasing behavior is a common struggle for individuals with ADHD. Understanding the underlying motivations and the role of executive function response inhibition can help in developing strategies to overcome this tendency and establish healthier boundaries. In the subsequent sections, we will explore practical tips and techniques to stop people-pleasing behaviour when living with ADHD.

How do I know how to stop being a people-pleaser?

Because I used to say yes to taking on clients when inside I meant no… people pleaser sign

I would change my outfit whenever my partner (now ex) would say that my clothes weren’t appropriate… people pleaser sign

I would look at my calendar and realise only 10% of the things that featured on it were actually moving my life goals forward… major people pleaser sign!

I am a recovering people pleaser

Being a people pleaser was actually doing me more harm than good

But it was a survival mechanism to feel accepted by others

When you get clarity on what is important to you and how it elevates your life it get’s a whole lot easier to say no to other people’s agendas.

2. SAY “CAN I GET BACK TO YOU”

When you give yourself time to think about whether you can fulfil the request of another person you give yourself a chance to make better decisions. When we stretech ourself thin we stress ourself out, does it make sense to be stressed to make another person happy?

Why do amazing, intelligent, gifted women tend to hide in their business?

WHY DO THEY ATTRACT FRIENDSHIPS IN THEIR LIVES THAT DRAIN THEM AT AN EXPONENTIAL LEVEL?

It’s not a worth issue. It’s a way of SURVIVAL


Survival mode is an adaptive response to help us survive danger and stress. It’s dangerous and stressful to not fit in.


You dim to fit in to survive.


You dim to fit in because we live in a culture that has taught you to attach labels to those who don’t ‘fall in line’ as aggressive…
Arrogant
Difficult
Loud and obnoxious.


You dim to fit in because we’re taught you that you need to behave in a certain way to make others feel good.


You dim to fit in because we’re taught to adapt or ‘code switch’ to keep our job’s, social circles and level of lifestyle.


You dim to fit in because we’re taught to go along with the behaviours of the majority because you’re only the ‘minority’.


You’ve been doing this for most of your life that it’s become habitual. Yet your subconscious beliefs are driving your “fit in patterns”.


On a behavioural level if you don’t act like you can be unapologetically visible & shine without dimming to fit in then it doesn’t matter how many mindset shifts you make – you’re not going to see lifelong changes if you keep falling back into the fit in the pattern of behaviour. You will always find another reason to bite your tongue, code switch, basically contract into old behaviours so you dim to fit in again.


Understanding your patterns of behaviour is key. The piece that most of the clients miss before working with me is being equipped with tools on a mental, emotional, behavioural and energetic level to shift their state.


The constant labelling, code-switching, self-doubt, external validation by others; it changes when you unapologetically shine while feeling like you fit in on that deep cellular level.

How To Netflix & Heal This Weekend With Easy Shadow Work

How To Use Netflix To Do Shadow Work

So here’s what this process looks like with Netflix:

You’ve got a set of questions to think about like…

😛 Where are you being destructive in your life choices?

😛 Where is negativity showing up in your everyday?

😛 What part of your life are you unwilling to rebuild?

And you can answer this by watching Cobra Kai.

Yes! Cobra Kai which was recently was added to Netflix

I can’t get enough of this show

I spent the weekend watching it in my room

I actually growled at my daughter when she disturbed 😳 me from watching it

Side note: I don’t do talking in the cinema either

I haven’t been this obsessed with a show since The Umbrella Academy and before that, it was Gilmore Girls

Back to Cobra Kai and shadow work😜…In one episode of Cobra Kai, you observe that Johnny keeps on making assumptions, speaks without thinking, and shoots himself in the foot.

What archetype does that sound like? Yes…the Saboteur.

The saboteur is one of the many archetypes (characters) that we can identify with

When dark the saboteur is self-destructive, negative and has an unwillingness to rebuild.

Johnny’s character was playing out this identity because he felt rejected.

This rejection was to help Johnny redirect his life so he could rebuild

But Johnny kept on focusing on the dark elements of the saboteur so was unable to see the light

Johnny sees the light in the saboteur when he PAUSES & reflects on his life choices

That’s the medicine AKA gift of the saboteurs

Because like Picasso once said “Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction”

and that’s what you will discover when you become a master observer for the specific archetype you’re playing with

Then when it comes back to dealing with our shadow self

😛 Where are you being destructive in your life choices?

😛 Where is negativity showing up in your everyday?

😛 What part of your life are you unwilling to rebuild?

It gets much easier to pinpoint because you’re relaxed, open and detached because you’ve seen it play out on the big screen 😎

When you are not in the relaxed, open state to do this work, this is what normally happens …

You fight with the saboteur and stay in the dark because you don’t want to feel

But it isn’t for one day, it can last months, weeks, years and decades of avoidance

In order to do the integration work, we must sit with the dark parts from a place of compassion (I guide you to do this with my MC ICE framework).

The reason why I encourage my clients to not bypass the feeling is that it’s the feeling that often sparks the trigger

And it’s the trigger that needs the readjustment

We reprogram the association with the new feeling to do that integration work.

There are parts of Johnny’s story resonates with the parts of us that feel rejected.

Watching Netflix is just some of the creative playwork I encourage my clients to do based on their behaviour type.

Some people choose Netflix, others choose painting, others choose dancing, whatever it is I honour their behaviour type

The point is to there are no rules to playing with the shadow

When you trust your gut you’re trusting the collection of all your subconscious experiences.

You’re drawing on everything you’ve experienced for all the years you’ve been alive, which means it’s constantly growing and evolving.

Your gut is part of your instincts

The ultimate purpose of your gut instinct is to protect you.

As your gut instinct is the most ancient and primal “sixth sense” you have, it is the one you can rely upon the most.

Wait….What? Is your gut your intuition?

So here is where it get’s really interesting (for at least me anyway)!

Some people use the word intuition and gut interchangeably but they are different

Your gut is your primal wisdom, other wise known as your gut instinct.

Your Intuition is your spiritual wisdom.

We need both if we are to walk our spiritual paths with courage and intelligence.

Your head (logical mind), heart (emotional mind), and gut (stomach mind) work together with your intuition so that they can all be in agreement . The result of this alignment is so you don’t war with yourself, resist or backtrack through indecision; which means decision-making and action becomes a whole lot easier.

Why can’t you trust your gut, heart and head separately?

Great question, here are a few reasons

  1. The issue with the logical mind – The head holds some cognitive biases. As a result, we have to tap into cognitive biases tools to overcome problems like information overload, lack of meaning, the need to act fast, and how to know what needs to be remembered for later.

2. The issue with the heart – The heart can store past hurts and often feel guarded. Faith is the andecdote to trust issues but often we lack faith because we hold onto past hurts as a form of protection. As a result faith doesn’t get a look in.

3. The issue with the gut – When your gut is off, you likely feel symptoms such as bloating, constipation or gassiness. Your solar plexus chakra and sacral need to be healed. As a result this can lead to a leaky gut which can cause symptoms including fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety, memory loss, and other brain-based disorders.

Your gut health has a huge impact on our overall health and wellbeing. As a result of the three minds being in alignment you make decisions for a healthy holistic place.

What does trusting your gut even look like?

This is how I like to think about it…Older people aren’t wiser because they are old, they’ve just made more mistakes that you can learn from, trusting your gut is learning from your mistake, it is being wise!

  1. You go to the supermarket and pick up some cherries even if it is not on your list and then find Cherries was the key fruit you needed that gave you more pep in your step!
  2. You go to a job interview you get a feeling you should ask a question that will turn the outcome on it’s head you ask and as a result you get the job
  3. You have a feeling to comment on someone’s post on instagram and that person replies, looks at your profile and decides to purchase from your shop

So what is trusting your gut great for?

Trust your gut if you want to achieve your goals. The result of trusting your gut is that you feed your desires rather than your F.E.A.R.S .

So let’s talk about desires for a moment, because it is an important topic and more than likely something you work on accomplishing or sabotaging daily (depending on what you’re feeding).

The very word desire comes from the Latin root words De Sire, which literally means “Of the Father”

Ignoring our desires doesn’t’ work.

Suppressing our desires doesn’t work.

Replacing our desires doesn’t work.

Sabotaging our desire doesn’t work.

Living from disordered desire doesn’t work.

What does work?

Living a life of true desire is what works. As a result you are fulfilling what God has placed in you, what is already yours in the spiritual.

Jesus says in, in John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”1

How to know your gut is feeding your desire of your heart

I used to watch the show Lucifer (the now cancelled Lucifier ?)

Don’t judge me, read Outwitting the Devil: The Secrets to Freedom and Success, you can gain a lot of insight on some of the blocks that are stopping your manifestations

And now, back to the show Lucifer… he would always ask people he was questioning what is it you truly desire?

Those desires that Lucifer plies out of people are ones that are riddled with shame that are not of your heart

This was a desire born out shame, repressed feelings that isn’t aligned with head, heart and gut. As a result of being misaligned we trade our peace for other people’s anxious ridden thoughts and let them become ours.

How do you know if the desires of your heart are from God?

We have peace. As a result our head, heart and gut are aligned

Because it’s a peace, an inner knowing that passes all understanding which isn’t mental.

It’s spiritual.


We have to have peace in our Spirit to truly know if it’s of God or not.

If the peace that passes all understanding is not there, then it’s not of God.

So what is your heart’s desire?
